FROM THE PARISH PRIEST The Little Roads: I was invited to visit the village of Heydon last week. I had never been there before so I set my satnav and let that do the work for me. I was taken along some beautiful country lanes, some only wide enough for one car. Instead of worrying about what I would do should I encounter a car coming the other way, I simply decided to enjoy the journey and the natural beauty of this part of our country. At one stage I found a place wide enough to pull over and I sat and admired a particular glade of trees that were ablaze with their autumnal beauty. I felt very much at peace there; enjoying the tranquillity, silence and openness of my situation. Those who know me well, will know that I am a stickler for punctuality and I get anxious about being late and inconveniencing other people. However, often in this part of the county, I encounter a road closure or a diversion of some point. I have generally been in the fortunate position to have enough time to follow the diversion and discover new and enthralling areas of beaty and peace. Fortunately, I have never been catastrophically late for anything, (a benefit of leaving way ahead of time). Instead, I have learned more about the God of Creation along the narrow country lanes and have been reminded of just how small I am and in need of God’s love and protection. I enjoy the quietness and solitude of driving and simply being able to look for the presence of God – either in nature or in my own thoughts and observations. How blessed we are to live amongst such beauty. This can be applied to life as well. It is in the unexpected people, places and events where we often stumble upon God and the work that he has in store for us…..we just need the courage to enjoy the diversion.
