Dear Friends,

‘What must I do to inherit eternal life?’ the man asks in the Gospel. Some people are not bothered about eternal life – they are only interested in this life! But for us it is a question that is real enough because it shapes the direction of our lives in this world and in the next. Sadly the man could not accept the challenge that Jesus put before him – to leave everything and follow him – because he was not able to give up his wealth. Jesus promises his disciples, who have given up all to follow him, that they will have rewards that go far beyond mere material riches.

Thanks to all who prepared the Harvest Lunch last Sunday as well as those who came to enjoy it. A great occasion!

Father James

This Week is Prison Week, in which we are asked to pray for prisoners and their families.

Next Sunday is World Mission Day. A Retiring Collection will be taken for Missio (the Association for the Propagation of the Faith).

The Rosary will be said during October. Volunteers are needed to lead at North Walsham. Leaflets on saying the Rosary are available.

Senior Citizens’ Group (NW) – Monday 15th October. The annual Healing Mass will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church at 12noon, to which everyone is welcome to attend. A shared lunch will follow, for all.

There will be a Eucharistic Service at St Helen’s, Hoveton, at 7pm on Monday 15th October. There will also be one held on Monday 19th October.

The next PPC Meeting is on Tuesday, 30th October and it will be held in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm.

Two vacancies on the PPC, (Parish Pastoral Council) as Frances Green (Sacred Heart) and Rob Hardie (St John of the Cross) are both due to step down from representing their respective communities. We need your nominations for new members to take their places. This is important for our parish so PLEASE, take action! Consider who you feel would be a suitable and interested representative. Nomination forms are available in the two church porches. Our grateful thanks go to Rob (as Chairman) and Frances.

There will be an Open Morning at St Francis of Assisi School on Tuesday, 6th November from 9.30-10.30 am. If you are looking for a place for your child in Reception Class next year there is an information evening on Thursday, 15th November 15th at 7 pm.

Our parish now has three new Safeguarding reps, one for each of our communities: Gerry Mildenhall for Sacred Heart, Fran Ludden for St John of the Cross and Hilary Bolger for St Helen’s. They have all now completed their training.

A Forum meeting will be held at St Helen’s on Saturday 20th October, after the 5.30pm Mass.

Thank you for supporting CAFOD’s Family Fast Day. Our parish raised £1,052.52 plus £154 from the raffle at the Harvest Lunch.

Items for the newsletter and the parish diary. If you have details on any forthcoming events taking place in our three communities or news from around the diocese that could be publicised in the weekly bulletin or parish diary, please post these items to the office email address or hand in on paper. The email address is: sacredheart@computer-assist.net

We pray for all our sick parishioners, including Mary Johnson, Joe Seely, Sheila Hall and Maria Wilby.

We pray for Margaret Neate and Meda Hatfield who died recently; we remember their families and friends at this time. We pray also for all those whose anniversaries occur at this time including: Catherine (Kay) Higgs, Arthur Pitman, David Pugh and Mary Newton.
May they rest in peace.
