Dear Friends,

The idea of being a chosen people implies that other nations are not chosen. This is commonly held in the Old Testament: the only exceptions are those who convert to Judaism. Today’s Gospel can come across as presenting a harsh Jesus. In fact the fierceness of his argument makes the point that such an exclusive view of the chosen people is now redundant. The issue is not about ethnicity but faith. We are familiar with the principle that the Gospel is for all people and this is reflected in the wide range of different cultures and ethnic origins even in our own congregations. It would be interesting to know how many nationalities are represented in our parish!

The re-decorating of the Sacred Heart church is nearly finished. Sunday Mass is celebrated in the parish hall today for the last time. It also looks as if we will be able to start using the church during the week once the scaffolding has been taken away. There will be Mass next Saturday and also Confessions in the church at the usual time.

Father James

For weekday Masses, each week there is a Mass at St Joseph’s Sheringham on: Mondays at 9.00 am, Tuesdays at 7.00 pm

Our annual Mass in The Garden of Remembrance at the Sacred Heart takes place on Tuesday 22nd August at 6.00 pm. Should it be a wet evening the Mass will be celebrated in the church.

Free to a good home! Single bed with headboard, base and mattress – in good condition.

There will be no meeting of the Hoveton 4th Wednesday Club for senior citizens during the month of August.

The Annual Riverside Ecumenical Service at Hoveton is next Sunday 27th August at 3.00 pm on the Pocket Park (behind Roy’s Car Park). If the weather is inclement it will be held in Saint Helen’s Church. It would be good to see more representation from the Catholic community.

Norfolk Churches Trust will be running the annual Sponsored Bike Ride & Walk on Saturday 9th September.

Jean Eastaugh’s Requiem Mass will be on Wednesday, 23rd August at 12.30 pm in the church at North Walsham. Jean was a member of the Senior Citizen’s group and regularly attended Sunday Mass at North Walsham. Everyone is welcome to come to her Funeral Mass. Jenny Copeman’s Requiem Mass is on Wednesday 30th August at 1.30 pm in the church at North Walsham.

We have been asked to pray for Margaret Wynes who was taken seriously ill last Sunday.

We pray for Dudley Hardingham who died last week also Jean Eastaugh and Jenny Copeman who both died recently and all whose anniversaries occur this week including: Audry Barnes and George Mayer.
May they rest in peace.
